Dr. Joseph Barrage Wanjui currently chairs the board of UAP Provincial Insurance and sits on the boards of Stanbic Bank, Commonwealth Africa Investment Fund, Transparency International, Acacia Fund, and the Bawan Group of Companies. He began his career working for ESSO before joining the Industrial and Commercial Development Corporation (ICDC) as chief executive for four years. After ICDC, he joined East Africa Industries Ltd/Unilever for 28 years.
H.E. President Mwai Kibaki appointed him Chancellor of the University of Nairobi in 2003. The University of Nairobi conferred him an Honorary Doctor of Science in 2004. In 1983 he was awarded the MBS (Moran of Burning Spear) and in 2004 was honoured with the CBS (Chief of Burning Spear). Dr Wanjui holds a B.A in Physics & Mathematics from Ohio Wesleyan University and an MSc in Industrial & Management Engineering from Columbia University, both in the US.
